Distilling a wine is a single operation. The map shows its legal outcome: a France covered with delimited areas, a point in Andalusia, another on the Peruvian coast. The law has cut the continuity into distinct objects — it is this cutting-up that the room walks through.

Stop 02 of 06 · Charentes

Cognac, head of the arc

A geographical indication whose area is drawn from the INAO delimitation, and six denominations within it, each with its own outline. This hierarchy has a room of its own: the route “The crus of Cognac” crosses it cru by cru. Here it is only one stage of the arc.

Stop 03 of 06 · Gascony

Armagnac and its three parts

The same structure as in the Charentes, one notch further south: one area, three denominations. Bas-Armagnac to the west, Ténarèze in the centre, Haut-Armagnac to the east — names that state a position in the country, not a rank. The three outlines are drawn from the INAO delimitation.

Stop 04 of 06 · The quiet arc

Every vineyard has its spirit

Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Marne, the Côtes-du-Rhône, Bugey, Languedoc, Faugères: seven geographical indications almost nobody cites, and which prove the room's thesis. Wherever wine is made, it has been distilled. Cognac is not a French exception — it is the best-known part of a general practice.

Jerez, the same gesture under another name

Brandy de Jerez is a Spanish geographical indication entered in the Union register — the same register, the same protection as Cognac. The map shows only a marker for it: no outline is filed for foreign areas, and the dotted circle says so instead of drawing an approximate Andalusia.

Pisco, ten thousand kilometres away

The arc ends on the Pacific coast. Peru and Chile each protect their own pisco; the corpus entry is the Peruvian appellation, recognised by the Union. Distilling a grape must there is the same gesture as in the Charentes — it is the geography of appellations that refuses the kinship, not the technique.
